Investigator list

Investigator list

This list is driven by X5. Investigators only appear on the list in the following circumstances:

  • They are named on a project in X5 on the DA tab or the DI tab, and the role has been set to PI or CI.
  • They have a valid employee number (resource id). Manually entered investigators will therefore not be imported into MARS, as this causes too many difficulties with identification.

  1. Click on the Investigators tab to display a list of investigators.

  1. The list may be sorted by Investigator Name, FTE Allocation, PI Direct Budget or Overheads by clicking on the two arrows to the right of the required item.

Investigator name: Note that the list of names reflects what is in X5, and may not necessarily agree with the list of Project Managers and Top Task Managers reported in the Oracle Project Portfolio with Spend report.

Estimated allocation: an investigator’s FTE calculated by MARS for this month. MARS takes the average FTE for an investigator as shown on the X5 DA staff and DI staff tabs, on the Breakdown by Person sub-tab. All averages for current projects are added by MARS to calculate the FTE as at this month. Allocation records are included if the X5 costing type is Award (AWA), Transfer-in (TIN), Supplement & Extension (SUX). Note that if an investigator’s FTE allocation shows as 0 in MARS, this means that no time was allocated to them in X5.

For a further explanation please see the guidance on the Estimated FTE allocation by month section on the Individual Investigator page.

PI direct budget: sum of all direct cost budgets from Oracle for projects where the investigator is the lead investigator. If your department is the lead department for a collaborative project, this figure includes all budgets for all top tasks for all collaborating departments. If you are the partner department, only the budget for your own department is included. If £0 shows against the investigator, this means the investigator has been imported from X5 (because they have some FTE allocated to a project) but there is no match with the project number in Oracle, or your department is not leading any of the projects with which the investigator is associated.

Overheads: sum of all overhead budgets from Oracle for projects where the investigator is the lead investigator. If your department is the lead department for a collaborative project, this figure includes all overheads budgets for all top tasks for all collaborating departments. If you are the partner department, only the overheads for your own department are included. If £0 shows against the investigator, this means the investigator has been imported from X5 (because they have some FTE allocated to a project) but there is no match with the project number in Oracle, or your department is not leading any of the projects with which the investigator is associated.
